Fly Spray Applicator
Fly spray season is upon us and no matter what fly spray you prefer, this tip will help you. You generally will find me performing the typical spray down before and after riding a horse or before they get turned out but generally speaking, you are spraying the top layer of the hair so it’s not extremely helpful and that’s if it even makes it onto your horse without the wind catching it! The other option is to wipe your horse down with a fly spray mitt or a towel but your hand is covered in fly spray afterwards so I wouldn’t say that method is ideal either.
This post has a better alternative. Use a dishwashing wand, fill it with fly spray and use the sponge end to apply! Now, this may take forever to do over your horse’s whole body but at least for the legs, belly and face this is a great option so you can really rub the fly spray into the hair. I find when you rub the fly spray in, the fly spray is a little bit more effective.
Boyd Martin’s Morning Routine
I think we all love seeing a glimpse into the life of someone we admire; it feels like we are getting the inside scoop, the exclusive view that hasn’t been seen before which is why I wanted to share this short video of Boyd Martin. Boyd Martin is an icon in the equestrian world, everyone knows who Boyd is. He brings lightness to our sport, a childlike spirit that I think is lost among many riders as they start to compete and go up the levels. This video is a morning with Boyd and how he gets his day started. Seeing his morning routine has given me some ideas of things I want to tweak in my personal routine and if you don’t have a morning routine, maybe this will inspire you to create one!
Ride Recovery-FitAID
Many riders, especially adult amateurs, do not see themselves as athletes. It’s a shame considering all of the time and energy most people put into their riding, on and off the horse. You should view yourself as an athlete and take care of yourself as an athlete; this also relates to Boyd’s morning routine I shared above. One way I treat myself like an athlete is by drinking a FitAID instead of buying a coffee or an energy drink when I am feeling drained after riding or showing. All of the LifeAID drinks are wonderful but with horse show season upon us, I recommend bringing the FocusAID and FitAID options to any horse show. These drinks have electrolytes, BCAAs (recovery amino acids), vitamins, some have caffeine and more. If you listen to your body, many times it’s tired because it needs nutrients and some TLC after you ride, not a sugary Starbucks drink. And I bet you’re thinking they probably taste “healthy” but I honestly crave the flavor of a FitAID, my favorite is the citrus medley.
Many of the LifeAID options can be found in grocery stores (Hyvee and Cub for the MN people), some gas stations or you can order online. On the LifeAID website you can use the store locator or if you want to purchase online, you can purchase a case and set up a subscription to receive your drinks monthly. You’re an athlete, make sure you treat yourself like one.
