Cute But Functional Winter Boots

Many people have asked about my winter barn boots so I felt that this was the perfect place to share. I was on the search for a reasonably priced boot that was waterproof, warm but also not bulky like my muck boots. Of course, I found these boots on the overly convenient Amazon. These boots are more sturdy and well made than I expected and they truly are waterproof (I will most likely re-waterproof them continuously like I do with my other winter boots.) They come in lots of different neutral colors as well. I wouldn’t say these are riding boots but I have hopped on horses in these boots and the fitted style stabilizes my ankle and leg while still being able to feel the horse’s side so in my opinion they are way more comfortable than a lot of the chunky styles for winter.

And here’s a little Amazon tip, if you feel guilty for your continuous purchases from the monopoly company, use www.smile.amazon.com. By doing so, you pick your favorite charity and your purchases will donate small amounts to them every time you make a purchase. Last year, all my purchases benefitted Best Friends Animal Society. It is so simple and you can feel a little better about your shopping.

Girth Shapes

I found this blog post really interesting because I often get asked about girths and the different shapes they come in. Most of us know that horses are all shaped a little differently and are not the same anatomically but what does that mean for your girth? This is only Hufglocken’s girth styles but I love that before you buy a girth from their site, you can look at the pictures and read the descriptions to match which girth shape would work best for your horse. They even link to a scientific journal article about girth pressure, which is now in my list to read, but that tells me they have done their research and makes me feel more confident in their designs and products. I am not in love with my current girths so these anatomical girths may be my next investments for my horses.

Straight from the Horse Doctor’s Mouth

Straight from the Horse Doctor’s Mouth is a podcast from an equine vet, Dr. Erica Lacher and her husband and host Justin Long. I have not listened to every episode but there are so many good ones to choose from depending on what you want to learn about. She discusses disease, performance horses, common problems or misconceptions and more. One of my favorite episodes is S5, E17 Pre-Purchase Exams (and why every horse needs one). I tend to like interview podcasts and this isn’t necessarily an interview but Justin asks Dr. Erica Lacher really great questions and they have good conversation so it isn’t just Dr. Erica Lacher talking at you which I appreciate and it makes the episode more interesting. The episodes are easy to listen to but also super educational so find a topic that interests you and throw it on in the car on the way to the barn! You can find the podcast on pretty much any platform, the link below is for their website where you can browse by categories or search for a specific topic in the search bar.
